Agree on the design inputs
Ask for the existing alignment, cap elevations, neighboring transitions, water depth and ground investigation used in the design. The retained dock and nearby loads should be identified.
Naples’ checklist asks for adjoining-wall elevations and the proposed cap information. A higher wall is not automatically an appropriate or approved design.
Decide how the old wall and equipment move
Request a sequence showing demolition, temporary support if needed, equipment access and material delivery. City staging guidance excludes residential vacant lots.
- Which docks or lifts must be removed?
- How are buried utilities protected?
- Where does demolished material go?
- Who restores paving, planting and irrigation?
Carry approvals through completion
Ask the project team to list environmental, building and coastal approvals separately. Collier routes marine demolition through PRMAR. The City checklist calls for a final survey to obtain completion.
Save the approved plan version used on site. A changed alignment, material or elevation should be reviewed before it is built.
Make the construction sequence visible
For an occupied property, add a plan for temporary access and areas that will be unavailable. Ask who updates residents when the sequence changes. Put start assumptions beside the schedule, including approvals and any access arrangements still to be resolved; a calendar date alone is not a complete plan.
| Scope item | What to request |
|---|---|
Access and removal | Ask which structures must move, how materials reach the water, and what remains of the existing wall. |
New wall and connections | Request the design basis, work limits and details at both neighboring boundaries. |
Drainage and backfill | Identify how these items are coordinated with the structure and which checks precede concealment. |
Site return | Define dock/utility reconnection, grading, planting and the documents needed for project completion. |
Read the full price
A per-foot wall price may omit design, removal, rock, access or restoration. Reconcile each allowance with the scope ledger. Ask how unexpected ground conditions and extra work are authorized.
Compare the replacement with the documented repair alternative, if one is appropriate.
